Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States is in the interests of Tehran, West Asia and the wider world.
Speaking at a ceremony in Tehran, Pezeshkian said implementation of the agreement would prevent the US and Israel from causing further “chaos, aggression and insecurity” in the region, allowing regional countries to focus on stability and development, according to a statement published on his office’s website.
The Iranian President also stressed the need for Muslim countries to strengthen unity and solidarity to thwart what he described as “enemies’ sinister plots”, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran had never initiated a war but would firmly respond to any aggression.
“We do not welcome war, but will stand strongly against any aggressor, and no power can force a nation that is standing with all its might and will into surrender,” he said.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned in a social media post on Saturday that “major” efforts were allegedly underway to manipulate global energy markets for personal gains and prolong what he described as the US war against Iran.
Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps said its security forces had dealt a “decisive” blow to a “terrorist” team affiliated with the US and Israel in southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province. According to the IRGC, one member of the team was killed and six others were arrested.
The latest developments come amid continuing tensions between Tehran and Washington. On February 28, Israel and the US launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities, prompting Iran to respond with missile and drone attacks against Israel and US bases and assets in the region. Tehran also tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
On June 18, Iran and the US signed the MoU aimed at ending the conflict in the region on all fronts. Under the agreement, the two sides were scheduled to hold negotiations within 60 days to reach a final settlement, with the deadline expiring on August 17.
However, the future of the negotiations remains uncertain following a fresh escalation between Iran and the US last month.
