Egypt and Kuwait have called for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic negotiations between Iran and the United States amid heightened regional tensions.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah discussed the rapidly changing regional situation during a phone conversation on Saturday, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.
The two ministers explored ways to contain the escalation and agreed that reducing tensions and reviving Iran-US negotiations should be prioritised, Xinhua News Agency reported.
They pointed to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Iran and the US on June 18 as a possible framework for restarting talks and pursuing political solutions aimed at preventing further instability in the region.
The ministers also exchanged views on regional security concerns and stressed the need to address sources of tension in ways that strengthen regional peace and stability.
They reaffirmed the principles of good-neighbourliness, respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states. They also called for disputes to be resolved through peaceful and diplomatic channels.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Friday that Tehran remained prepared to negotiate with Washington but continued to harbour concerns about the US.
In a televised interview, Pezeshkian said Iran would honour its commitments if the other side reciprocated, while responding to questions about efforts to revive the June peace MoU and safeguard Iran’s rights.
“We can move forward” if Iran’s actions are met with reciprocal and proportional steps from the other side, he said, while acknowledging that both sides might not achieve all their objectives.
Under the MoU, Iran and the US were scheduled to hold negotiations within 60 days to work towards a final agreement. The deadline expired on August 17, but the future of the talks remains uncertain following renewed tensions between the two countries last month.
The latest diplomatic appeals by Egypt and Kuwait come amid wider regional efforts to prevent further escalation and encourage a return to dialogue between Tehran and Washington.
