A 45-year-old man was killed and another seriously injured after four car-borne assailants allegedly opened fire at their vehicle in Mamdot late Sunday night.
The victims were identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi (45) and Harpreet Singh alias Happy (22). They were travelling in a car when the assailants allegedly fired at them, leaving both with gunshot injuries.
The injured were rushed to Civil Hospital, Ferozepur, where doctors declared Gurpreet Singh brought dead. Harpreet Singh, who sustained serious bullet injuries, was referred to a private hospital in Ludhiana for further treatment.
According to information available, Vicky Maini, the newly appointed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president of Mamdot Nagar Panchayat, was also present with them when the firing took place. He escaped unhurt.
Gurpreet Singh’s father, Balkar Singh, is a former Congress leader. Gurpreet had been associated with the AAP for some time, while his sister-in-law was recently elected as a member of the Nagar Panchayat.
Ferozepur Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh said police had identified the accused and teams had been dispatched to arrest them. He said the suspects were allegedly known for criminal activities.
The SSP said the preliminary investigation suggested that the incident may have stemmed from personal enmity linked to the recent municipal elections.
Dr Shifa, Medical Officer at Civil Hospital, Ferozepur, confirmed that Gurpreet Singh was declared brought dead, while Harpreet Singh had sustained serious bullet injuries.
Police teams are conducting raids to apprehend the accused, while further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact motive and circumstances of the firing.
