Actor Alan Cumming once recalled an awkward moment involving Hollywood star Ryan Gosling at the Cannes Film Festival, where an auction proposal involving the actor reportedly received no bids and left him walking off the stage.
An old clip from ‘The Graham Norton Show’ has resurfaced online, in which Cumming spoke about hosting an event at Cannes featuring an auction to raise funds.
Cumming recalled that Gosling had offered to kiss anyone in the audience, regardless of gender, as part of the fundraising auction.
“When I did it, they had these auctioneers, it’s like a big fundraiser thing. Ryan Gosling came on,” Cumming said, adding that the bidding began at around $40,000.
However, according to Cumming, the proposal failed to attract any bids.
“And nobody bidded. Nobody bidded. Ryan Gosling’s standing there, licking his lips, getting all ready. And nobody bidded. And poor Ryan Gosling had to walk off,” he recalled.
Cumming said he even suggested lowering the starting amount, but the proposed price still appeared too high for the audience.
“I was like, ‘Take the ticket, start at $500.’ And it was just too much money,” he said.
Describing the moment as “mortification”, Cumming recalled hearing Gosling’s footsteps as he left the stage.
“That’s awful. It was just mortification. Just the sound of his footsteps going. At least he’s bounced back. He hasn’t let it dog him,” he added.
Gosling has since established himself as one of Hollywood’s prominent actors, known for his versatility and understated screen presence. He began his career as a child actor before gaining wider recognition with films including ‘The Notebook’, ‘Half Nelson’ and ‘Drive’.
His performances in ‘La La Land’ and ‘Barbie’ further showcased his range, combining comedy, drama and musical performance. He has received several major award nominations and honours during his career.
Beyond acting, Gosling has also pursued music.
