India and Uzbekistan have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with the two sides agreeing to expand trade, strengthen cooperation in emerging technologies and deepen collaboration across infrastructure, energy, critical minerals, space and other key sectors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the outcomes of his talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent on Sunday, saying the two countries would work towards taking bilateral trade beyond $5 billion by 2030.
“Key outcomes from today’s talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent include: Elevation of India-Uzbekistan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Boost trade to over 5 billion dollars by 2030. Increase cooperation in infrastructure, DPI, AI, critical minerals, energy, space and more. Enhance market access, connectivity, banking and payments,” Modi said on X.
The Ministry of External Affairs said several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were finalised during the Prime Minister’s state visit.
MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George said the two sides had held positive discussions on a long-term arrangement for uranium supplies to India and were close to signing an agreement.
Another key development was the rollout of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Uzbekistan, which is expected to facilitate digital transactions between the two countries and further expand the global footprint of India’s digital public infrastructure.
An MoU was signed between India’s Ministry of Mines and Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology covering cooperation in geology and mineral resources, including critical minerals and uranium.
The two sides also signed a letter of intent between the Ministry of External Affairs and Uzbekistan’s Cultural Heritage Agency for the conservation and restoration of the ancient Buddhist sites of Fayaz Tepa and Kara Tepa in Termez.
India and Uzbekistan signed another MoU on cooperation in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine.
An MoU was also concluded between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Diplomatic Academy at Uzbekistan’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy to strengthen cooperation in diplomatic training.
In the environmental sector, India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Uzbekistan’s National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change finalised an agreement on cooperation in environmental protection.
