A 22-year-old undergraduate student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), who had returned to Aligarh from Jammu and Kashmir four days earlier, was found hanging at his rented accommodation in the Civil Lines area, police and university officials said.
The second-year BA (Hons) student of Foreign Languages (French) was found dead on Friday, according to AMU Proctor Naved Khan.
Officials said the student allegedly left behind a note in which he described himself as a “loser”, saying he could no longer cope with the problems he was facing and asking his parents to forgive him.
The incident is the second reported suicide involving an AMU undergraduate student within four weeks.
Earlier this month, a 19-year-old undergraduate student from Kolkata was found hanging in her hostel room at the university’s I G Hall, a senior university official said.
The latest incident comes amid separate protests at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi over the investigation into the alleged suicide of a 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student.
According to police, a PCR call was received at Kishangarh Police Station at around 8:33 a.m. on August 22 after a student allegedly jumped from a building on the IIT Delhi campus.
Police personnel reached the spot and found the student injured before he was taken to the IIT Delhi campus hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The crime scene investigation team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team examined the site and collected evidence.
Police said their investigation found that the student had entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 a.m. He then went to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the sixth floor and allegedly jumped from the front side of the building.
No suicide note was recovered from the spot. However, a mobile phone was found in the deceased student’s pocket and was subsequently sent for examination as part of the investigation.
