Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has reported that 675 bodies have been recovered from areas affected by mudslides and flash floods, while 2,498 people remain missing.
According to Nepal’s Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, 753 tourists had lost contact with authorities as of 5:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, including 589 foreign nationals, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The devastating floods, triggered by a sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi River, have caused extensive loss of life and widespread damage to hydropower projects, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
Amid the ongoing rescue and relief efforts, India has stepped up assistance to the Himalayan nation. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Saturday that a fourth Indian flight carrying an additional 11 tonnes of assistance had been dispatched to Nepal aboard a C-130 aircraft.
“The 4th flight from India with 11 tonnes of assistance is now airborne,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
The aircraft is carrying a tunnel technical contingent and equipment for search and rescue operations, a team of forensic experts and equipment for DNA analysis, as well as relief supplies including blankets, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, plastic sheets and hygiene kits.
Jaishankar said 16 trucks carrying equipment for a 230-foot Single Lane Modular Steel Bridge had reached Nepal, while equipment required to install seven additional Bailey bridges would be supplied soon. Technical teams for the installations are also expected to arrive shortly.
So far, 68.5 tonnes of relief material, including essential medicines, portable generators, food packets, water purification tablets and technical equipment, have been airlifted to Kathmandu, he said.
“Our support to the relief and rescue efforts of Nepal continues,” Jaishankar added.
The Kathmandu District Administrative Office has also issued an urgent appeal to associations, institutions, businesses and individuals to donate relief supplies for victims in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, an Indian Air Force C-130J Hercules aircraft had earlier airlifted 10 tonnes of emergency relief material, including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines.
