Hollywood star Tom Cruise is set to return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the sequel to the 1990 racing drama ‘Days of Thunder’, with Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway joining the cast.
Hathaway will reportedly play a team owner and engineer in the upcoming sequel, reuniting her with Cruise for the new instalment of the iconic film.
Jonathan Levine is directing the project, with Will Staples writing the screenplay. Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper are also attached to the film in key roles.
The sequel is currently scheduled for a summer 2028 release, although an exact date has not yet been announced.
Cruise shared a video on his official Instagram account featuring himself and Hathaway laughing together as they announced their upcoming collaboration.
Hathaway, who is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, said in the clip, “I’m going to have this baby, and then we’re going to make this movie.”
The post was captioned, “Days of Thunder. Summer 2028.”
Directed by the late Tony Scott, the original ‘Days of Thunder’ starred Cruise as Cole Trickle, a hot-headed driver who enters the NASCAR circuit and faces a series of professional and personal challenges before finding success.
Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the 1990 film also featured Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes, Caroline Williams and Michael Rooker in key roles.
Cruise’s upcoming projects include ‘Digger’, in which he will star opposite Sandra Hüller.
Hathaway, meanwhile, has several projects in the pipeline, including ‘Verity’, ‘Alone at Dawn’ and ‘Princess Diaries 3’.
