The Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar Police have solved the Kurali murder case within four to five hours of the incident and arrested the accused, police said on Saturday.
Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said the incident took place on August 28 at around 12.30 p.m. in Ward No. 13 on Badali Road, Kurali.
According to the police, Saroj Devi, 45, wife of Om Nath Rai, was allegedly attacked with a knife at her residence. She succumbed to her injuries. Her husband, Om Nath, also sustained stab wounds to the abdomen and is undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital, Phase-6, Mohali.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused, Sonu Kumar, 25, son of Suresh Kumar and a Kurali resident, was allegedly opposed to his sister marrying Bittu, son of Om Nath, of her choice.
Police said that after learning about the marriage, Sonu Kumar allegedly went to Om Nath’s residence armed with a knife and attacked Saroj Devi and Om Nath.
On the statement of the injured victim, an FIR was registered at Police Station City Kurali under Sections 109 and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A special police team was constituted for the immediate arrest of the accused under the supervision of SP (Rural) Jaspinder Singh and the directions of Harkirat Singh, PPS, DSP Kharar-2 (Mullanpur). The team was led by Inspector Harsh Mohan Gautam, SHO, Police Station City Kurali.
Acting swiftly, the police team apprehended Sonu Kumar within four to five hours of the incident.
The accused will be produced before a court, where police will seek his remand for further investigation. Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
