Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday directed state agencies to intensify rescue and relief efforts for tourists and residents from the state stranded in flood-hit Nepal, with 404 citizens verified safe and 338 successfully contacted so far.
Fadnavis instructed officials to maintain close vigilance and coordinate travel arrangements to ensure the safe return of all affected citizens to their respective hometowns.
According to official updates, 41 people returned from Saga in Nepal on Saturday, while 106 citizens are scheduled to reach Nagpur at 4.30 a.m. on Sunday. Nearly 143 others are currently travelling towards Maharashtra.
A 45-member group comprising tourists from Nashik, Pune, Mumbai and Ahilyanagar has safely crossed into India. The group, which had travelled through an Ahilyanagar-based tour operator, was in Chitwan when the floods struck.
With roads to Kathmandu blocked, the group was diverted through Lumbini and was expected to reach Ayodhya on Saturday. Further travel arrangements will be made in coordination with the state government.
A group of 106 people from Nagpur has also begun its journey home through Bihar, with buses and other transport arrangements deployed following the intervention of the Chief Minister.
The Maharashtra government, under the direction of Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to facilitate rescue and repatriation efforts.
The MEA had released a list on August 28 containing details of 149 Indian tourists who had safely entered Nepal from China. State officials are verifying the details to identify Maharashtra residents and facilitate their return.
Authorities are also trying to establish contact with eight tourists from Borivali and Andheri who remain stranded in Nepal. Connectivity problems have hampered efforts to reach Laxminarayan Acharya from Andheri and others in the group, while officials remain in touch with their families.
A 24×7 Disaster Management Control Room at Mantralaya is coordinating the relief operation, with helplines also activated for citizens and their families.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Emergency Operations Centre said it had not received any distress calls so far concerning residents of Mumbai City or Mumbai Suburban districts.
