Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday began his two-day State Visit to Uzbekistan, receiving a warm welcome from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who personally travelled to Tashkent airport to receive him.
Modi thanked the Uzbek President for the gesture, describing it as a reflection of the close friendship between India and Uzbekistan and the growing momentum in their bilateral relationship.
“Landed in Tashkent to a warm welcome by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Grateful to him for the special gesture. This is my fourth visit to Uzbekistan, reflecting the depth and growing momentum of our bilateral relations,” Modi posted on X after his arrival.
During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with Mirziyoyev. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, digital connectivity, defence and energy, while advancing the development goals of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Uzbekistan-2030.
“In recent years, India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership has seen significant advancement. I look forward to my discussions with President Mirziyoyev on further deepening our cooperation in trade and investment, digital connectivity, defence, energy, and on advancing our shared visions of Viksit Bharat and Yangi Uzbekistan,” Modi said in his departure statement.
The Prime Minister will also visit the Shastri Memorial and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. He described the visits as a tribute to the close cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Modi’s current visit is his fourth to Uzbekistan. He had earlier travelled to the country and other Central Asian nations in 2015, and visited Uzbekistan in 2016 and 2022 for Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summits.
India and Uzbekistan have maintained extensive bilateral and multilateral engagement over the years. Mirziyoyev undertook a State Visit to India in 2018 and participated in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in 2019.
Uzbek citizens also expressed enthusiasm over Modi’s arrival, with one woman wishing for continued growth in ties between the two countries.
From Tashkent, Modi will travel to Bishkek at the invitation of Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Zhaparov to attend the 26th SCO Summit, which will mark 25 years of the organisation.
