A police officer was killed and another injured in a shooting at a park in Columbia, South Carolina, while the suspected gunman also died, authorities said.
Columbia Police Department Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook said the incident occurred at Southeast Park on Hazelwood Road when two officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Officer Chris DeLong, 29, was fatally shot while responding to the incident, Holbrook said. A second officer, David Dymock, was also shot and wounded and remained in stable condition.
“Our hearts are broken this evening,” Holbrook said at a news conference on Saturday evening. “Together under the worst circumstances you can possibly imagine, we’re deeply hurt.”
Police said the scene had been secured around noon local time and urged members of the public to stay away from the area as investigators continued their work.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, the last Columbia police officer killed in the line of duty was Lieutenant Philip George Schlatterer, who was fatally shot on July 25, 1974, more than five decades ago.
The latest incident comes amid a series of shootings at public places in the US.
Earlier this month, one person was killed and four others injured in a shooting at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said five people were shot, including a four-year-old child, a 14-year-old and two adults. All four injured victims were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.
A heavy police presence remained in downtown Lexington, with several roads closed as the investigation continued.
In a separate incident, five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University, prompting the university to temporarily lock down its campus.
