Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Sunday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “outstanding statesman” and a “wise political leader”, saying India’s rapid development and growing global influence in recent years were closely associated with his leadership.
Mirziyoyev made the remarks while conferring Uzbekistan’s highest honour, the Oliy Darajali Do‘stlik Order, on Modi in recognition of his contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries.
Thanking Modi for the warmth and openness extended during his visit, the Uzbek President said the two sides had held productive discussions covering their historical ties, areas of cooperation and future plans.
“Prime Minister, my dear brother, I thank you for the level of openness and brotherhood,” Mirziyoyev said, adding that Uzbekistan also appreciated Modi’s sincerity and warm words for the country.

Praising Modi’s international standing, Mirziyoyev said the Prime Minister commanded profound trust and respect among the people of India and had emerged as a leader with considerable influence globally.
“We know you not only as an outstanding statesman and a wise political leader who enjoys the profound trust and respect of the people of India, but also as a leader of immense international standing,” he said.
The Uzbek President credited Modi’s strategy and modernisation programmes for India’s achievements across sectors, saying Uzbekistan took pride in the country’s progress.
He also described the elevation of India-Uzbekistan ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as a historic milestone and said Modi had made an “invaluable personal contribution” to achieving it.
“Today is a memorable and historic day in the development of our bilateral relations,” Mirziyoyev said.
On trade, he said the current bilateral trade turnover of $1 billion should be regarded as only a starting point. Uzbekistan is targeting $5 billion as the first benchmark and, Mirziyoyev said, he believed trade could eventually reach $10 billion.
