Australia fast-bowling all-rounder Michael Neser has extended his association with Brisbane Heat, signing a two-year contract that will keep him with the franchise through the end of the 17th edition of the Big Bash League.
The 36-year-old has been part of the Heat setup since the inaugural 2011-12 BBL season and is now set to return for his seventh summer with the Brisbane-based franchise.
Neser’s continued presence adds experience to a pace attack that also features Australia quicks Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson, along with emerging fast bowler Callum Vidler.
New Heat head coach James Hopes praised Neser’s contribution, particularly in pressure situations.
“You look at when the Heat are at their absolute best and (he) is never far away from the action. His presence around the group always helps the players as they strive to be a successful unit,” Hopes said in a franchise statement.
“It was fantastic to see him enjoy the Ashes victory last season and know that he had brought those same qualities to the Australian team,” he added.
Neser is joint-ninth on the BBL’s all-time wicket-takers list, with 117 wickets from 105 matches. After spending nine seasons with Adelaide Strikers and helping them win the BBL title in season seven, he returned to Brisbane Heat in 2021.
His best BBL campaign came in season 12, when he claimed a career-high 26 wickets and helped the Heat reach the final. He followed that with 12 wickets the following season as Brisbane secured their second BBL championship.
Neser has also become the 11th player named in Brisbane Heat’s 18-member men’s squad for BBL season 16.
Reflecting on his contract extension, Neser highlighted the experience of playing in front of a packed Gabba.
“As a player, it’s always been the best thing about the BBL; there is always the chance to make an impact on the game,” he said.
“There’s nothing better than being a Heat player at the Gabba when the ground is packed and the crowd is heaving, and you look up in a key moment and know that everyone is right there with you,” he added.
Neser’s deal is the second player contract completed since Cricket Australia lifted the league-wide contracting embargo, following Melbourne Renegades’ signing of leg-spinner Michael Archer. BBL clubs can now directly sign domestic and overseas players after the overseas player draft model was discontinued.
