West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for paying tribute to legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar during the latest episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, describing the reference as a matter of immense pride for the people of the state.
Modi’s tribute came three days before Uttam Kumar’s 100th birth anniversary, which will be observed on September 3.
In a social media post, Adhikari said it was “deeply heartening” to hear the Prime Minister honour the celebrated actor, widely regarded as the Mahanayak of Indian and Bengali cinema.
“Today, I had the privilege of tuning into the latest edition of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiJi’s #MannKiBaat from my office. It was deeply heartening and a matter of immense pride for all of West Bengal to hear our Hon’ble Prime Minister pay a glowing tribute to the Mahanayak of Indian and Bengali Cinema, the legendary Uttam Kumar, on the landmark occasion of his 100th Birth Centenary which will be celebrated on 3rd September,” Adhikari said.
The Chief Minister said Modi had highlighted Uttam Kumar’s cinematic talent, charisma and enduring artistic legacy, noting that his performances continue to influence Bengali cinema and inspire generations of filmmakers, storytellers and audiences worldwide.
“On behalf of the people of West Bengal, I express our sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for celebrating the immortal legacy of our beloved Mahanayak on this National platform,” Adhikari added.
The West Bengal government has planned a four-day festival from September 3 to 6 to mark Uttam Kumar’s centenary, along with year-long programmes commemorating his contribution to cinema.
The celebrations will include guided walks taking admirers through historic Kolkata locations associated with the actor’s life and career.
The Department of Posts will also issue a special commemorative stamp and postal cover to mark the occasion.
