West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul on Saturday demanded the custodial interrogation of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in connection with what she described as alleged conspiracies surrounding the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
Paul’s remarks came on the day Kolkata Police registered a suo motu FIR against Banerjee at Hastings Police Station in South Kolkata, alleging violation of a Calcutta High Court order during Friday’s foundation day rally of the Trinamool Congress’ student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP).
After attending an administrative review meeting at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters, Paul told reporters that custodial interrogation of Banerjee was necessary in the R.G. Kar case.
“The FIR registered at Hastings Police Station is justified. One of the major wrongdoings committed by the previous Chief Minister was the attempt to cover up the death of the junior lady doctor at R.G. Kar,” Paul alleged.
She questioned why Banerjee should not face arrest if former Trinamool Congress chief whip in the West Bengal Assembly Nirmal Ghosh had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“She was involved in the entire controversy, from directing the erstwhile Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal to arrange the autopsy of the victim’s body after 6 p.m., to arranging hurried cremation of the body and ensuring the crime scene was not secured,” Paul alleged.
Paul also defended the FIR against Banerjee over Friday’s TMCP rally, saying the former Chief Minister could not disregard judicial orders.
She said the Calcutta High Court had clearly directed that traffic movement should not be disrupted because of the rally, but alleged that supporters of Banerjee had nevertheless blocked traffic.
“Such blatant disregard towards law cannot be tolerated,” Paul said.
The allegations regarding the handling of the R.G. Kar case and the circumstances surrounding the crime scene were made by Paul in her interaction with the media.
