The Madhya Pradesh Congress Scheduled Castes Department has approached the police over the alleged sprinkling of Ganga water at a venue in Haldwani after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public rally there, calling the act discriminatory and seeking action under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
A delegation of Congress leaders and workers reached the MP Nagar police station in Bhopal on Sunday and submitted a written complaint seeking registration of an FIR and legal action against those allegedly involved.
According to the Congress, after Kharge’s public meeting in Haldwani, individuals associated with the BJP and RSS reached the venue and sprinkled Ganga water over the stage and surrounding area, describing the exercise as a “purification” ritual.
The Congress Scheduled Castes Department has objected strongly to the alleged act, arguing that purifying a venue after a public meeting addressed by a Scheduled Caste leader amounts to social discrimination and reflects a mindset associated with untouchability.
In their complaint, party leaders urged the police to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged ritual. They also sought registration of a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and strict action against those found responsible.
The complaint was submitted by Scheduled Castes Department state president Pradeep Ahirwar, state spokesperson Abhinav Baroliya, state vice-president and office in-charge Mukesh Bansal, organisation general secretary Ramesh Chandra Bakoria, state secretaries Jagdish Rohar and Mahesh Verma, and district president Neeraj Chandale, along with several party workers.
The controversy relates to Kharge’s Haldwani rally in Uttarakhand. The Madhya Pradesh Congress unit has now sought police intervention, alleging that the reported post-rally “purification” was objectionable and reflected prejudice against members of the Scheduled Castes.
