West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday said he had directed the state police to register an FIR against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged violation of conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court for the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day rally in central Kolkata.
The Calcutta High Court had granted conditional permission to the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress to hold the rally on Friday. Among the conditions was a direction that the gathering remain confined to one of the two road lanes, with the other kept open for traffic.
Adhikari alleged that the conditions were violated during the rally, with both lanes being occupied by participants.
“The Court clearly directed us to conduct the rally keeping one of the two lanes free for traffic movement. The former Chief Minister assembled people and blocked both the lanes. I have directed the police to register an FIR in the matter. I have also directed the police to approach the Calcutta High Court in the matter,” Adhikari told mediapersons.
He said the alleged violations were visible and indicated that the matter would be pursued before the High Court.
Ritabrata Banerjee, who leads the rebel faction of the Trinamool Congress and is the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, also accused the organisers of breaching the court-imposed conditions.
Banerjee alleged that Mamata Banerjee had encouraged some supporters to break barricades separating the two lanes and occupy the entire road. He also claimed that the court had specified a maximum number of participants for the rally.
There was no immediate response from the Mamata Banerjee-led faction to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
Addressing the rally on Friday, Mamata Banerjee had hit out at the BJP-led state government and predicted the Trinamool Congress would return to power in West Bengal.
She also claimed that ordinary BJP supporters would soon hold their own party leadership accountable.
“Very soon Trinamool Congress will return to power in West Bengal,” she had said.
