Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has expressed grief over the devastating floods in Nepal, offering his thoughts and prayers to those affected by the disaster and recalling the warmth he experienced during his visit to the Himalayan country.
Du Plessis spent time in Nepal last year while representing Biratnagar Kings in the 2025 Nepal Premier League (NPL). Reflecting on his experience, the cricketer said he had personally witnessed the kindness of the country’s people and its natural beauty.
“I was lucky enough to visit Nepal last year and experience firsthand the kindness of its people and the incredible beauty of the country. It’s devastating to see what has happened. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, and with the families and communities facing such heartbreaking loss,” Du Plessis posted on X on Saturday.
His message came as large-scale search, rescue and relief operations continued across Nepal following catastrophic flooding in the Nepal-Tibet border region.
According to the figures cited in the report, 626 people have been killed and 2,426 remain missing, while nearly 4,451 stranded people, including 187 foreigners, have been evacuated by rescue teams.
Those reported missing include security personnel and government officials. The list includes 27 Nepal Police personnel, 45 Nepal Army personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel, 15 Customs Office personnel and four Immigration Office personnel.
The Nepal Army has deployed around 6,700 personnel for disaster response operations, while more than 1,700 injured people are receiving treatment at emergency medical facilities.
India has also stepped up relief and rescue assistance following a formal request from Kathmandu. Since Wednesday, India has dispatched 62 tonnes of humanitarian relief material to flood-affected areas in Nepal.
An 11-member Indian contingent, comprising medical personnel and specialised tunnel rescue experts, has also reached Nepal to assist in ongoing disaster response efforts.
The relief supplies include tents, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, dewatering pumps, kitchen sets, generator sets, eight tonnes of medicines and one tonne of food items.
