The Bhagwant Mann government on Saturday launched the 10-day ‘Mission Clean Punjab’ campaign across urban areas of the state, with Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, mayors, municipal councillors and senior officials taking part in cleanliness activities and supervising sanitation arrangements on the ground.
Running from August 29 to September 7 under the theme ‘Clean Punjab, Proud Punjab’, the campaign will focus on identifying and eliminating Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs)—locations where waste is repeatedly dumped. Special teams will undertake intensive cleaning at such sites and take measures to prevent the recurrence of garbage accumulation.
Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains led the campaign in Nangal in Sri Anandpur Sahib, where he participated in sanitation activities and interacted with sanitation workers and residents.
Bains said cleanliness could not be left solely to sanitation workers and called upon residents, shopkeepers and local communities to share responsibility for keeping public spaces clean. He said the campaign would go beyond one-time cleaning and establish a sustainable sanitation system backed by regular monitoring and action at recurring garbage points.
In Kotkapura, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan honoured sanitation workers before joining them in cleanliness activities. He said secondary waste collection centres and garbage dump points across Kotkapura and other parts of Faridkot district would undergo intensive cleaning.
Sandhwan said the campaign involved sanitation workers, district administrations, municipal councils and officials of concerned departments. Lists of sanitation workers deployed in different wards, along with their mates and supervisors, have also been prepared and will be uploaded on the government portal to enhance transparency and accountability.
He stressed that public cooperation would be essential to sustain the campaign’s results beyond the 10-day drive.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh led the campaign at Thapar Chowk in Patiala, highlighting the link between clean surroundings and public health. He said accumulated garbage and unhygienic conditions increase the risk of disease.
The campaign also saw participation from Cabinet Ministers Mohinder Bhagat at Nakodar Chowk in Jalandhar, Harbhajan Singh ETO in Jandiala Guru and Tarunpreet Singh Sond at the Khanna Municipal Council office. ETO was accompanied by the municipal council president, councillors and sanitation workers, while Sond launched the drive from the municipal council office.
MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa initiated the campaign in Baltana, Zirakpur, alongside municipal councillors, ward in-charges and officials, with the stated objective of making Zirakpur clean and garbage-free.
In Amritsar, MLA Dr. Ajay Gupta and Mayor Jatinder Pal Singh Moti Bhatia led the campaign. In Fatehgarh Sahib, MLA Advocate Lakhbir Singh Rai led the drive initiated by the Sirhind Municipal Council.
MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj participated in Sangrur, covering the route from Khanda Chowk through Haripura to Poonia Tower and later joining the campaign at Tur Pati Park in Bhawanigarh.
In Moga, MLA Dr. Amandeep Kaur Arora and Deputy Commissioner Sagar Setia led the drive. MLA Rupinder Singh Happy and SDM Deepjot Kaur oversaw activities in Bassi Pathana, while MP Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal monitored the campaign in Phagwara.
In Ajnala, MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal led the drive, with the SDM, Executive Officer and AAP volunteers participating. Garbage heaps were removed from several locations.
The government has also invited citizens to participate through the M-Seva app, where photographs of garbage and unhygienic spots can be submitted. The administration will use these reports to identify problem areas and facilitate timely action.
The government has appealed to residents and shopkeepers to refrain from dumping waste in public places and cooperate with municipal bodies in maintaining cleanliness around residential and commercial areas.
The campaign is aimed at using the 10-day drive to strengthen the urban sanitation system and establish a sustained culture of cleanliness across Punjab rather than limiting efforts to temporary removal of accumulated waste.
