Karnataka School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa on Saturday said the tears shed by former minister B. Nagendra while resigning over what he described as baseless corruption allegations would hurt the BJP politically and contribute to its downfall in the state.
Addressing mediapersons at his home office in Bengaluru, Bangarappa accused the Opposition BJP of making politically motivated allegations against Nagendra in connection with the Valmiki Development Corporation issue. He alleged that the BJP was unable to accept the political rise of Dalit and Scheduled Caste leaders.
“Nagendra is a four-time MLA and a prominent Dalit and Scheduled Caste leader. The BJP is making politically motivated allegations against him. The party will have to pay a price for this,” Bangarappa said.
Calling Nagendra senior to him in politics, the minister said the allegations had caused hurt among marginalised communities. He maintained that Nagendra was innocent and said the government had examined and discussed the investigation reports.
Reacting to Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka’s allegations against Nagendra, Bangarappa questioned whether Ashoka had the authority of an investigating agency to make such claims.
“Is R. Ashoka a CBI officer to argue the case against Nagendra? Investigating agencies will do their job,” he said.
Bangarappa also criticised BJP leaders for celebrating Nagendra’s resignation and referred to the “fake signature issue” while questioning BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra.
Turning to the proposed BJP-JD(S) padayatra, Bangarappa questioned the alliance’s position on Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. He said three years had passed since permission was sought from the Governor to prosecute Kumaraswamy, but sanction had not been granted.
“Is there an exemption for Kumaraswamy because he is now in an alliance with you? Is there one law for them and another for us? First, let the BJP-JD(S) leaders undertake a padayatra against Kumaraswamy,” he said.
Bangarappa said the government was ready to discuss the Nagendra issue during the Monsoon Session if the Opposition submitted proper notice. He accused the Opposition of disrupting proceedings instead of participating in a debate.
He said the Assembly could have used the session to address issues including drought, the Cauvery water dispute and the Kasturirangan report, but valuable House time was instead spent on political confrontation.
