Operation Sindoor demonstrated the capabilities of India’s indigenous weapons and missile systems and showed that the country has emerged as a major defence technology power, Union Minister of State B.L. Verma said on Saturday.
Addressing the 115th Foundation Day celebrations of the National Test House (NTH) and the inauguration of its new building in Bengaluru, Verma said the operation had highlighted the technological capabilities developed as part of India’s push for self-reliance.
“When we saw Operation Sindoor, the world witnessed the capability of our indigenous weapons and powerful missiles. Today, India is not behind anyone,” he said.
Verma also highlighted the NTH’s contribution to India’s scientific testing and quality ecosystem over more than a century. He said the institution had completed 114 years of service and evolved into an important component of the country’s national quality infrastructure.
The minister said the NTH began its journey in 1912 as the Government Test House at Alipore in Kolkata and had since expanded its role in scientific testing, product quality, safety and reliability.
He said the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, was pursuing initiatives including ‘Make in India’, ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect’ and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, with quality forming the foundation of these objectives.
“Quality is the foundation of all these goals. The quality of a product determines its reliability, and that reliability gives the product its identity as a brand,” Verma said.
The minister said the NTH was being modernised in line with the vision of “Reform, Perform and Transform”, while expanding into emerging areas of technology.
He particularly highlighted drone testing and certification, noting that drones were increasingly being deployed in defence, agriculture, surveying, disaster management and other civilian applications. Reliable testing and certification, he said, would help establish a safer and more robust drone ecosystem.
Verma also highlighted NTH facilities for electric vehicle battery testing, saying reliable assessment of EV batteries and related systems would contribute to industrial safety, efficiency and India’s global competitiveness.
He stressed the importance of expanding chemical testing capabilities for chemical safety, industrial material assessment, environmental monitoring and public health.
On the Bengaluru facility, Verma said its location was significant given the city’s position as a major hub for technology, innovation, research, engineering and advanced industries.
“The presence of NTH in Bengaluru will provide industries, startups, research institutions and innovators with better testing and technical services,” he said.
Verma said the new building represented more than physical infrastructure, describing it as a step towards strengthening India’s scientific capabilities and quality infrastructure to address future testing requirements.
