Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon has strongly condemned the visit of three BJP MPs to the residence of Sajjan Kumar, a convict in a 1984 anti-Sikh massacre case, to offer condolences, describing the incident as “extremely painful and unfortunate”.
Dhillon said the visit had nothing to do with the Punjab BJP and maintained that the state unit unequivocally condemned the incident.
He said Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of Sikhs during the 1984 violence and argued that expressing sympathy towards him was deeply hurtful to families who lost their loved ones.
“Expressing any kind of sympathy towards such a person amounts to rubbing salt into the wounds of thousands of victim families who lost their loved ones in the massacre and is an insult to their suffering,” Dhillon said.
Dhillon said BJP national president Nitin Nabin had taken serious note of the MPs’ visit, expressed his displeasure and reprimanded them. He thanked Nabin for what he described as an immediate and firm response, saying it reflected the central leadership’s sensitivity towards the sentiments of the 1984 victims.
The Punjab BJP president also targeted the Congress, alleging that the party had followed a policy of protecting and patronising those accused in the 1984 violence for 35 years.
He credited the Narendra Modi-led government with constituting Special Investigation Teams in cases related to the violence, saying the move resulted in accused persons being sent to prison decades later and opened the way for justice.
Dhillon reiterated that the Punjab BJP would continue to stand with families of the 1984 victims.
“Our sympathy and compassion are only for the victims and their families who continue to suffer the trauma of that tragedy even today. Our policy leaves no room for the guilty,” he said.
