Families of people missing after devastating flash floods in Nepal have gathered outside Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, putting up posters and displaying photographs in the hope of finding their loved ones.
Relatives have been waiting outside the hospital’s emergency gate for information, while the hospital administration has put up photographs of recovered bodies at the entrance to the post-mortem block to help families identify the deceased. Officials are updating the photographs every hour.
A man searching for his missing brother said he was last in contact with him two days before the floods. His brother remains unaccounted for in Rasuwa.
Another relative showed photographs of his three missing brothers, all of whom worked as drivers. According to him, the three were transporting a vehicle towards China when the floods struck, after which they went missing.
Families said rescue teams and the Nepal government were continuing evacuation and search efforts in Rasuwa, but many people remained untraced.
One local resident recalled the disaster striking while he was near the Customs Department. He said he had been sleeping in a vehicle and later went to the market for tea when the glacier burst occurred. After receiving a warning, he ran uphill, but many people in the area became trapped and are now missing.
Another family said a brother-in-law working at a mess near the Rasuwa border had called to report that flooding had hit the area and people were in distress. When the family called him about an hour later, his phone was switched off.
A woman said her elder brother’s grandson had gone to the border to load a vehicle and was about to leave when an accident occurred just five metres away. The family has had no contact with him since.
In Nuwakot, relatives of other missing people have also gathered outside an Army camp, carrying photographs and waiting for information.
As search and rescue operations continue across flood-hit areas, families remain hopeful of locating those still missing, while authorities work to trace survivors and identify recovered bodies.
