Bhim Army activists staged a ‘Rights March’ in Patna on Saturday demanding that 85 per cent of government jobs in Bihar be reserved for candidates holding state domicile, but the demonstration was stopped by police and several protesters were detained following a confrontation.
The march began at Gate No. 10 of Gandhi Maidan, with participants planning to proceed towards Raj Bhavan. Police had erected barricades along the route and deployed a large security contingent between Gandhi Maidan and Raj Bhavan to prevent the protesters from moving ahead.
Tensions rose when activists attempted to cross the barricades, leading to a scuffle between protesters and police personnel. Several activists were subsequently detained, bringing the planned march to an early end before it could reach Raj Bhavan.
The protesters argued that candidates from Bihar should receive greater opportunities in state government recruitment. They also raised concerns over various competitive examinations, including the upcoming Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) examinations.
The activists further demanded provisions enabling Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants to file FIRs online.
The Bhim Army demonstration drew a comparatively smaller gathering than several other protests held in Patna in recent days. Recent demonstrations by student groups and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) attracted substantially larger crowds and led to confrontations with security personnel at various locations in the state capital.
A large number of protesters were detained during those demonstrations. During an RJD protest, Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav was also detained by police.
The relatively lower turnout at Saturday’s Bhim Army march contrasted with the scale of the recent student and political protests in Patna, limiting the reach of the demonstration before it was brought to a halt.
