Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday launched a 10-day statewide cleanliness drive from Nangal, calling for coordinated efforts by the government, local bodies and citizens to eliminate Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) across the state.
The campaign, being undertaken from August 29 to September 7 as part of the Punjab Government’s ‘Mission Clean Punjab’, aims to tackle open garbage dumping sites and promote cleaner, greener and more attractive cities and towns.
Bains led the cleanliness activity in Nangal alongside Safai Sewaks, councillors and local residents. He said the campaign would involve MLAs, Deputy Commissioners, Municipal Corporation Commissioners, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Executive Officers, councillors, NGOs and other stakeholders.
According to the Minister, public representatives and officials will remain on the ground every morning during the 10-day drive to identify and clear Garbage Vulnerable Points.
“Punjab is the sacred land of our Gurus and saints and a land of immense spiritual power. It is our collective responsibility to keep it clean and beautiful,” Bains said.
He said several Garbage Vulnerable Points had already been identified in major cities and towns and that the campaign would focus on their systematic and permanent elimination through coordinated action involving government departments, local bodies and residents.
Bains urged citizens to treat the initiative as a people’s movement and participate actively in cleanliness efforts in their neighbourhoods.
Residents can report Garbage Vulnerable Points through the Punjab Government’s M-Seva app by uploading photographs of the locations. Each complaint will generate a unique ID, allowing users to track its status and facilitating prompt action on reported sites.
The Minister also highlighted the contribution of Safai Sewaks and appealed to residents not to undermine their work through irresponsible disposal of waste.
He said dedicated teams had been constituted in Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils to monitor implementation and ensure timely clearance of identified Garbage Vulnerable Points.
Bains also urged residents to download and use the M-Seva app and contribute to maintaining cleanliness in their localities.
