Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and organisers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) foundation day programme over alleged violation of conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court for the event.
The case was registered at Hastings Police Station in South Kolkata after Friday’s TMCP foundation day rally on Cathedral Road in central Kolkata. The police have alleged that the court-imposed restrictions on the venue and duration of the programme were violated.
The High Court had directed that the rally be confined to one lane of Cathedral Road, with the other lane kept open for vehicular movement. It had also permitted the programme from noon to 3 p.m.
According to the police, both lanes remained blocked for a substantial period after the programme began, resulting in significant traffic congestion. The event also continued beyond the court-prescribed 3 p.m. deadline.

The FIR further alleges that supporters of Mamata Banerjee engaged in scuffles with police personnel and obstructed them from performing their duties. Police have also alleged that Banerjee incited her supporters to disregard the court’s restrictions.
Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he had directed the police to register a case against his predecessor and approach the Calcutta High Court regarding the alleged violations.
“The Court clearly directed them to conduct the rally keeping one of the two lanes free for traffic movement. The former Chief Minister assembled people and blocked both the lanes. I have directed the police to register an FIR in the matter. I have also directed the police to approach the Calcutta High Court in the matter. The matter will not be taken so easily,” Adhikari said.
The FIR concerns alleged violations and the allegations have yet to be established in court. The police have said the role of all those involved will be examined during the investigation.
