Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tashkent on Saturday evening for a two-day State Visit to Uzbekistan, with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally receiving him at the airport in a special gesture underscoring the close ties between the two countries.
During his visit, Modi is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks with President Mirziyoyev, with discussions expected to focus on further strengthening the India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership and advancing their respective development visions of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Uzbekistan-2030.
In his departure statement, Modi said the strategic partnership between India and Uzbekistan had made significant progress in recent years. He said he looked forward to discussions with Mirziyoyev on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, digital connectivity, defence and energy, besides advancing the shared visions of Viksit Bharat and Yangi Uzbekistan.
The Prime Minister will also visit the Shastri Memorial and the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. He described the engagements as a tribute to the close cultural and people-to-people ties between India and Uzbekistan.
Modi’s arrival has also generated enthusiasm among people in Uzbekistan. Ahead of his visit, an Uzbek woman welcomed the Prime Minister and expressed hope that his visit would give further momentum to the friendly relations between the two countries.
This is Modi’s fourth visit to Uzbekistan. He had earlier visited the country and other Central Asian nations in 2015, and returned to Uzbekistan in 2016 and 2022 to participate in Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summits.
India and Uzbekistan have maintained extensive bilateral and multilateral engagement over the years. President Mirziyoyev visited India on a State Visit in 2018 and also participated in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in 2019.
Following his Uzbekistan visit, Modi will travel to Bishkek at the invitation of Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Zhaparov to participate in the 26th SCO Summit, which will mark 25 years of the organisation.
