The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Post Graduate (NEET-PG) 2026 will be conducted across 1,300 centres in 340 cities on Sunday, with 2,73,183 medical graduates registered to appear for the examination.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) released the admit cards for the examination on August 26. The test will be conducted in a single shift and has recorded an increase of more than 12.5 per cent in registrations compared with the previous year.
NEET-PG serves as the entrance examination for postgraduate medical programmes, including Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS), offered by government and private medical colleges.
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda recently reviewed preparations for the examination and directed all agencies involved to ensure a secure, transparent, technology-enabled and candidate-friendly process.
A comprehensive security system has been put in place, including CCTV surveillance, biometric authentication, frisking, signal jammers, dynamic computer allocation and live monitoring through central and regional command centres. More than 60,000 examination personnel are expected to be deployed.
Nadda also cautioned candidates against rumours and fraudulent claims concerning the question paper. He said the final paper is selected through a secure, encrypted and time-bound process shortly before the examination begins, with multiple technological and operational safeguards protecting its confidentiality.
He urged candidates to depend only on official communications from NBEMS and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and report any suspected unfair practices.
Officials briefed Nadda on examination logistics, candidate facilitation, security arrangements and technology interventions during the review meeting.
Several candidate-oriented changes have also been introduced this year. Aspirants were allowed to indicate three state preferences for examination centres, with their correspondence state required as the first preference. Test-city information was communicated nearly three weeks ahead of the examination to give candidates time to arrange travel and accommodation.
The examination pattern has been revised to 180 questions to be attempted in 210 minutes, providing candidates more time per question.
Aadhaar-based authentication has also been integrated into registration and examination processes, while iris-based biometric verification will be available as a backup where fingerprint authentication fails.
