Former England captain Sir Geoffrey Boycott has revealed that England batter Harry Brook never contacted him after he offered to help the Test star improve his concentration and decision-making in the longest format.
Boycott said Brook’s uncle had approached him last year to seek his assessment of the right-hander’s ability. The former England opener said he was struck by Brook’s exceptional talent and was willing to share his experience if the batter sought his guidance.
“He said, ‘Would you have a word with him?’ I said, ‘It’s not for me to go to him.’ But if he asked me, of course I’d help. Why would I not? I gave him my number and never heard a word,” Boycott said on the Geoffrey Boycott: An Extraordinary Innings podcast.
Despite being ranked the world’s No. 1 Test batter, Brook has gone more than a year without scoring a century in Test cricket.
Boycott, who played 108 Tests and 36 ODIs for England, believes Brook is yet to realise the full extent of his potential.
“I haven’t seen anybody with the talent he’s got for a long time. Enormous talent. The timing, the shot playing, he’s tall, big reach, but his thinking is just unbelievable,” he said.
Brook scored 91 in the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley before making 15 in the ongoing match at Lord’s. Boycott said the batter’s approach to Test cricket could prevent him from reaching the level his talent suggests is possible.
“If he wants to carry on playing that way, he’ll have a decent career, but he has the ability, if he could think better, to be in the realms of Lara and Tendulkar,” Boycott said, referring to batting greats Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar.
He added that only a select few players, including Sir Don Bradman, could be considered to have performed at an even higher level.
Boycott also criticised what he sees as Brook’s tendency to approach Test deliveries with a limited-overs mindset, warning that an overly aggressive approach could repeatedly expose him to dismissals in the fielding positions.
