The Delhi government’s flagship ‘Delhi Lakshmi Yojana’ was launched on Saturday, with the BJP describing the scheme as a step towards women’s empowerment. The scheme provides eligible women with monthly financial assistance of ₹2,500.
The registration portal for the scheme went live following its launch by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Several women who registered on the first day expressed hope that the financial support would provide greater independence and security.
BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat said the scheme reflects the government’s focus on improving women’s financial empowerment. She said the Delhi government had earlier introduced initiatives such as free DTC bus travel through the ‘Pink Pass’ and bicycles for Class 9 girls, while the new scheme would provide direct financial assistance to women.
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa urged eligible beneficiaries to complete their registration at the earliest. He said BJP MLAs have arranged additional support staff at constituency offices to assist women with the application process.
East Delhi District Magistrate Vadodaria Karanjit P. said more than 1,000 registrations had already been completed across Delhi after the portal became operational. Registration camps have been set up at district offices in all 13 districts, while beneficiaries can also apply online through mobile phones or computers.
Women beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, with several applicants saying the monthly assistance would help them meet personal and household needs. A homemaker said the scheme would reduce financial dependence and help women become more self-reliant.
BJP legislators also termed the scheme a fulfilment of a long-standing demand. MLA Abhay Verma said the government had established a system to ensure maximum participation, while MLA Anil Goyal said the scheme was backed by a budget allocation of around ₹5,100 crore.
