The death toll from monsoon-related incidents in Pakistan has risen to 196 since the beginning of the rainy season on June 26, while 404 people have been injured, according to data released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The NDMA report said electrocution remained the leading cause of fatalities during the ongoing monsoon season, followed by flash floods, drowning, lightning strikes, house collapses and incidents involving falling trees.
In the latest 24-hour period covered by the report, four people were killed and 16 others injured in rain-related incidents, including drowning and lightning strikes. Punjab reported the highest number of casualties during this period.
According to the NDMA figures, Punjab recorded 47 deaths and 295 injuries between June 26 and August 1. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 55 fatalities and 82 injuries, while Sindh recorded five deaths and seven injuries. Balochistan reported eight deaths and 15 injuries during the same period.
The disaster management authority also said rescue teams saved nine people in Punjab, five in Sindh and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during operations conducted in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, parts of Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB) continued to face disruptions after flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods damaged roads and affected connectivity in several areas.
Several valleys remained cut off, leaving residents and tourists stranded. Flood-affected communities also faced shortages of drinking water, electricity, communication facilities and essential supplies.
Residents of areas including Hisper Valley in Nagar district reported difficulties in accessing food, medicines and other necessities, while people in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer and other affected districts complained of prolonged disruptions in basic services.
