Olympic silver medallist and star Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has welcomed India’s opportunity to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, saying the event will inspire a new generation of athletes and provide a significant boost to sports development across the country.
Fresh from winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow, Mirabai said the prospect of the Games being held in India would encourage more youngsters to pursue sporting excellence.
Expressing her excitement, the 31-year-old said hosting a major international multi-sport event would expose aspiring athletes to world-class competition on home soil and motivate them to dream bigger.
Reflecting on her own journey from Manipur to becoming one of India’s most successful weightlifters, Mirabai credited her family for their unwavering support through every stage of her career. She said the path to success was filled with challenges, but having a strong support system made it possible to overcome difficult moments and continue striving for excellence.
The Commonwealth champion also spoke about the physical and mental demands of elite sport, particularly the challenge of coping with injuries during crucial phases of training and competition. She said athletes inevitably experience highs and lows, and maintaining discipline, mental strength and perseverance is essential to overcoming setbacks.
According to Mirabai, injuries often occur at the most critical stages of preparation, making resilience and determination as important as physical training. She stressed that consistent hard work, sacrifice and a positive mindset remain the foundation of long-term success in sport.
Mirabai scripted history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win three successive Commonwealth Games gold medals. She recovered from a missed opening snatch attempt to register a record-breaking 85kg lift before clinching the title with a successful 105kg clean and jerk, further strengthening her legacy as one of India’s greatest sporting icons.
