All India Imam Organisation (AIIO) Chief Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi on Sunday condemned the alleged use of abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during recent protests, saying that while dissent is a democratic right, demonstrations must remain within the limits of dignity and responsibility.
Ilyasi was referring to allegations that derogatory remarks were made against Prime Minister Modi during student protests at Jantar Mantar over examination paper leaks and other irregularities.
In a video message, the Chief Imam said citizens have the right to protest but stressed that such expressions of disagreement should not involve violence, damage to public property or offensive language.
“Everyone has the right to protest, and there is nothing wrong with that. But it should be done within the bounds of decency,” he said.
Referring to incidents of violence during demonstrations, Ilyasi said damage to public property ultimately affects citizens themselves. He alleged that government vehicles were damaged, roads were blocked and incidents of arson took place during the protests.
The AIIO chief said disagreements are a normal part of democracy but argued that criticism should not turn into personal abuse.
He said the alleged remarks against Prime Minister Modi and his late mother were painful and questioned whether such language reflected Indian cultural values.
According to Ilyasi, the use of abusive language against the Prime Minister was not only directed at an individual but also affected the country’s image internationally.
He said India’s global recognition was a matter of national pride and referred to the honours received by Prime Minister Modi from various countries. He added that such recognition represented respect for India rather than any single individual.
The remarks came after Prime Minister Modi, in a video message shared on Instagram, referred to criticism directed at him and his late mother during protests. Modi said mistakes happen among young people and expressed his willingness to forgive those involved, hoping that society would also accept his sentiment.
