Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha on Saturday hailed India’s strong performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026, describing the country’s rise in the medal standings as a “golden day” for Indian sport.
Her remarks came after Indian boxers delivered a historic performance at the Games by winning seven gold medals, the country’s highest-ever gold medal haul in Commonwealth Games boxing.
Expressing pride over the athletes’ achievements, Usha said hearing the national anthem played during medal ceremonies was an emotional moment for the entire nation.
“I am so happy; this is a golden day for India. Every time our boxers win a gold medal and the national anthem plays on the podium, it is a deeply proud moment for both me and our country,” Usha said.
India climbed from 10th place to fourth position in the Commonwealth Games medal table after securing 39 medals while competing in a limited number of events.
Usha credited the athletes, coaches, support staff and sporting ecosystem for the improved performance. She also acknowledged the support extended by the government and the Indian Olympic Association towards athletes.
“Behind every athlete, there is a dedicated team: coaches, doctors, physiotherapists, masseurs, and mental trainers,” she said, highlighting the contribution of professionals working behind the scenes.
The IOA chief said consistent institutional support has helped Indian athletes receive better preparation and facilities, enabling them to compete successfully at major international events.
She also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for encouraging athletes and supporting their efforts, saying such motivation boosts the confidence of sportspersons.
India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has marked another significant milestone in the country’s growing presence on the international sporting stage.
