Retired Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police P.V. Sunil Kumar has approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), seeking urgent action over an alleged attempt to intimidate a witness and interfere with evidence in two ongoing CBI cases.
In a representation to the CBI Director, Sunil Kumar referred to a media report in which Madala Srinivas allegedly accused Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju of attempting to kidnap him in connection with documents sought by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO). Srinivas reportedly told police that he feared for his safety.
Raghu Rama Krishna Raju is facing the cases in question from the period when he was a Member of Parliament.
Sunil Kumar said the reported incident assumes significance in view of the pending CBI investigations registered in 2019 and 2021 involving allegations of cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery, criminal breach of trust and misuse of public funds.
He warned that any attempt to influence witnesses, suppress records or tamper with evidence could affect the credibility of the investigations. Referring to provisions under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, he said investigating agencies have powers to take necessary action, including coercive measures, when required to prevent evidence destruction or witness intimidation.
The retired IPS officer urged the CBI to examine the reported incident, secure relevant documents and electronic records, determine whether any attempt was made to interfere with the investigations, and take appropriate legal action wherever warranted.
According to his representation, the 2019 case involves alleged financial irregularities causing a stated loss of Rs 947.71 crore, while the 2021 case relates to allegations of conspiracy, cheating, forgery, use of forged documents and criminal misconduct involving an alleged loss of Rs 237.84 crore.
Sunil Kumar served as Chief of the Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) when cases were registered against TDP leaders, including current Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, during the previous YSR Congress Party government. He was later transferred after the TDP-led coalition government assumed office in 2024.
