Police in Assam and Manipur have arrested six alleged drug peddlers, including a woman, in separate anti-narcotics operations and seized narcotics worth around ₹23 crore, officials said on Saturday.
The seized contraband includes methamphetamine tablets, heroin and brown sugar. Three of the arrested accused are from Assam, while the remaining three are residents of Manipur.
In Assam, personnel of the Special Task Force (STF) and Assam Police intercepted a vehicle at Amingaon on the outskirts of Guwahati following specific intelligence inputs. The vehicle was carrying three persons from Manipur.
During a search, police recovered 50,000 methamphetamine tablets weighing about 5 kg, hidden in specially designed compartments of the vehicle. Five soap cases containing 67.5 grams of heroin were also seized. The total value of the recovered drugs was estimated at around ₹12.5 crore in the international illicit market.
The arrested accused were identified as Kh Tabish (24) and Thekcham Avinash Singh (41), both residents of Thoubal district in Manipur, and Nongmaithem Biswajit (38) from Imphal West district.
Police said methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party tablets, are highly addictive substances containing methamphetamine and caffeine and are frequently trafficked across parts of South and Southeast Asia.
Investigators suspect that the seized drugs were smuggled from Myanmar through Manipur before being transported to Assam for distribution. Security agencies have repeatedly flagged the Northeast region’s vulnerable international borders as major routes for narcotics trafficking.
Meanwhile, Manipur Police arrested a person identified as Bhima Panika (42), a resident of Karbi Anglong district in Assam, during a vehicle check at Leingangpokpi checkpost in Jiribam district. Police recovered 5.21 kg of brown sugar from his vehicle, with the estimated illegal market value exceeding ₹10 crore.
In another operation, Manipur Police arrested Shahna (27), a resident of Kwakta in Bishnupur district, following a search at her residence. Around 70 grams of heroin powder was recovered, valued at more than ₹55 lakh.
Police also arrested Meraimayum Razak Ahamed (35) from Imphal East district in connection with an earlier NDPS Act case registered at Patsoi Police Station. The case relates to the recovery of brown sugar from a Pajero SUV found at a vehicle workshop.
Officials said further investigation is underway to identify other members involved in the narcotics supply network.
