The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for forgiving students who allegedly used abusive language against him during recent protests, describing his response as an example of compassionate leadership and contrasting it with the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975.
The reactions came a day after Prime Minister Modi released a video message on Instagram in which he addressed the youth and said he wanted to speak directly to them. Referring to the recent protests at Jantar Mantar over the NEET paper leak issue, he said some youngsters had used language that was inappropriate and had also targeted his late mother. Despite this, he said he wished to forgive them, describing such behaviour as a mistake of youth that could be corrected.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s remarks, BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo said the gesture reflected exceptional statesmanship.
“Similar protests happened during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, but she responded by imposing the Emergency. Our Prime Minister has forgiven the students and shown them the right path,” Shahdeo said.
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said Modi had spoken “not just as the Prime Minister, but as a guardian of the country’s children,” adding that there should be no politics over the issue.
Bihar BJP President Sanjay Saraogi also praised the Prime Minister’s response, saying it reflected his “large and compassionate heart” despite the personal attacks made during the protests.
Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Modi’s message offered a lesson in leadership and public conduct. He also alleged that the Prime Minister had long been targeted by what he described as an “abuse gang” attempting to use different sections of society to defame him and the country.
