India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 silver medallist Jadumani Singh credited veteran boxer Sarita Devi for playing a key role in shaping his career, saying her guidance and constant encouragement helped him achieve success on the international stage.
Jadumani won the silver medal in the men’s 55kg boxing category after losing the final by unanimous decision to Australia’s Jye Dixon on Saturday. The 22-year-old Indian put up a strong fight over three rounds, but Dixon’s effective counter-punching and accurate combinations helped him secure the gold medal.
Speaking after the final, Jadumani said Sarita Devi had supported him since his early days and continued to guide him throughout his Commonwealth Games campaign.
“Sarita Devi ma’am has supported me immensely since my childhood. She has done so much for me, whether it was guiding me about my diet, training, or every other aspect of being an athlete,” Jadumani told IANS.
He said Sarita remained closely involved during the Games, reviewing his performances and providing advice after every bout.
“During this competition, her support was even more significant. She constantly guided me on how to fight, what to do, and what to avoid. She watched every one of my bouts and gave me valuable feedback after each fight,” he added.
Although he missed out on the gold medal, Jadumani said the silver medal would motivate him to work harder for future competitions, including the Asian Games and other major international events.
“I am happy to have won a medal for India, but of course I wanted the gold. This silver will motivate me to work even harder,” he said.
Jadumani had an impressive run in Glasgow, defeating Scotland’s Aaron Cullen in his opening bout before overcoming Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman in the round of 16. He later defeated Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale in the quarter-finals and Namibia’s Philip Haoseb in the semi-finals to reach the title clash.
In the final, Jadumani matched Dixon in the early exchanges but the Australian gradually took control with disciplined counter-attacks, securing the Commonwealth Games gold while the Indian settled for a memorable silver on his debut.
