Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has urged the Central Government to take a decision on reopening the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor by keeping the religious sentiments of the Sikh community in mind.
Reacting to the statement made by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in Parliament regarding the continued closure of the corridor leading to Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan, Dhami said the issue is deeply connected with the faith and emotions of Sikhs across the world and should be addressed accordingly.
He said Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, holds immense religious significance as it is the sacred place where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the final years of His life and preached the universal message of Kirat Karni, Naam Japna and Vand Chhakna. Visiting the holy shrine, he said, remains a long-cherished aspiration of the global Sikh community.
Dhami said the prolonged closure of the Kartarpur Corridor has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of devotees. He described the corridor as a symbol of peace and goodwill between India and Pakistan, adding that it should not become a matter of dispute.
While acknowledging that safeguarding national security is the foremost responsibility of any government, the SGPC President said equal importance should be given to protecting religious freedom and respecting the sentiments of devotees.
He urged the Centre to review the matter at the earliest, make appropriate security arrangements and take a decision to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor so that Sikh pilgrims can once again undertake pilgrimage to the historic shrine.
