Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Neeraj Chopra and Yashvir Singh for securing a silver and bronze medal respectively in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026, describing their performances as an inspiration for young athletes across the country.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic champion, finished second with a season-best throw of 85.83 metres, while Yashvir Singh claimed bronze with a personal best effort of 85.41 metres, helping India achieve a memorable double podium finish in the event.
In a message congratulating Yashvir, Prime Minister Modi said the athlete’s performance reflected his dedication and determination.
“Congratulations to Yash Vir Singh for winning the Bronze in the Men’s Javelin event! He produced an impressive throw, reflecting his zeal and dedication. His achievement will inspire many young athletes. All the best to him for the endeavours ahead,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also praised Neeraj Chopra for maintaining his consistency at the international level.
“An outstanding Silver for Neeraj Chopra in the Men’s Javelin event at Glasgow! He has once again demonstrated remarkable consistency, composure and spirit. His successes make every Indian proud. My best wishes to him for the endeavours ahead,” he said.
Neeraj began the competition with an 80.97-metre throw before improving to 85.83 metres in his second attempt, which remained his best effort of the event. He also recorded valid throws of 81.29 metres and 80.73 metres, while his final two attempts were fouls.
Sri Lanka’s R.T. Pathirage won the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record throw of 89.75 metres, producing the best performance of his career. Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished fourth with 83.88 metres, followed by South Africa’s Douw Smit and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott.
Although Neeraj missed out on defending his Commonwealth title, India’s twin podium finish marked a strong performance in one of the Games’ premier athletics events.
