Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday announced an ex gratia assistance of Rs 10 lakh each for the next of kin of two labourers killed in a terror attack in Kulgam district, while strongly condemning the targeted killings.
The relief amount has been sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The Chief Minister’s Office said Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“The Chief Minister has strongly condemned the dastardly killing of two labourers in Kulgam and expressed profound grief over the loss of innocent lives. He announced ex-gratia relief of Rs 10 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
The assistance will be in addition to immediate financial support of Rs 6 lakh each announced by the district administration for the victims’ families.
The two labourers from Chhattisgarh were attacked by terrorists on Friday evening in Kellam village of Kulgam district. They were working at a brick kiln when they came under fire.
The injured workers were shifted to Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag. One victim, identified as Deepak, succumbed to injuries at the hospital, while the other injured labourer, Bopinder, was referred to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, in Srinagar, where he died on Saturday morning.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political and religious leaders in Jammu and Kashmir.
Security forces and the Jammu and Kashmir Police have increased vigilance around locations linked to the movement and stay of non-local workers following the incident.
The latest attack comes days after terrorists killed Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi in Anantnag town on July 22 while he was deployed for Amarnath Yatra duty.
