Two US congressional committees have launched a fresh investigation into food delivery platform DoorDash over its reported use of a Chinese-developed artificial intelligence model, citing concerns related to national security, cybersecurity and economic security.
The House Select Committee on China and the House Committee on Homeland Security said they have written to DoorDash co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Tony Xu seeking detailed information about the company’s assessment and deployment of AI models developed in China.
The inquiry expands a broader congressional investigation initiated in April into the adoption of Chinese open-weight AI models by American companies.
In their letter, Committee Chairmen John Moolenaar and Andrew R. Garbarino acknowledged that Chinese open-weight AI models offer practical advantages, including lower costs, greater flexibility and enhanced customisation. However, they said such benefits do not eliminate concerns over dependence on technologies developed by entities operating under the jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of China.
The lawmakers argued that the United States should strengthen the development and competitiveness of domestic open-weight AI alternatives while implementing safeguards for the use of foreign-developed models in sensitive and high-risk applications.
The investigation is examining the implications of integrating Chinese AI models into consumer platforms, enterprise software and systems that process sensitive commercial or personal information.
According to the committees, DoorDash has publicly stated that it incorporated open-weight AI models into its internal AI-assisted code review system. Public comments by company co-founder Andy Fang indicated that the platform uses a US-developed frontier AI model for more complex tasks while assigning lower-level coding work to Kimi K2.6, an open-weight model developed by Chinese startup Moonshot AI. The company has said the approach improved performance while reducing operational costs.
The congressional letter also referred to public statements by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy alleging that Moonshot AI operated a covert platform to distil American AI models and trained systems using advanced computing resources it was not authorised to access.
The scrutiny comes amid increasing concerns in Washington over the growing use of Chinese artificial intelligence technologies by US businesses, as policymakers seek to balance innovation with national security and supply chain resilience.
