Maharashtra Cyber has registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with an allegedly fake and inflammatory video that was shared from the X account of Congress leader Bhai Jagtap, officials said on Saturday.
The case has been registered against an unknown accused, even though the disputed video was posted from the account ‘Bhaijagtap1’. No individual has been named in the FIR so far, and Maharashtra Cyber has begun an investigation into the matter.
According to the complaint, the issue came to light on July 31 when the complainant noticed a post from the X account while browsing social media around 2 pm. The post contained a video with the caption, “Delhi Police makes serious allegations against the government.”
The video showed a person presented as an IPS officer allegedly announcing resignation from the Indian Police Service while making claims against the government. The individual in the video was purportedly heard alleging that pressure was being exerted on officials to make false statements against students protesting for their rights.
The complainant alleged that the video was fabricated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, claiming that the visuals, voice and dialogue attributed to the officer were artificially generated and manipulated.
The complaint stated that the Delhi Police had already conducted a fact-check of the video on July 28 and declared it fake. It further claimed that Delhi Police had issued a clarification through its official social media platforms, a copy of which was submitted along with the complaint to Maharashtra Cyber.
The complainant alleged that despite the clarification, the video continued to circulate without verification after being shared from the ‘Bhaijagtap1’ account. The complaint claimed that the circulation of the content could mislead the public and create confusion and unrest.
Maharashtra Cyber is currently investigating the matter. Further details are awaited.
