The West Bengal Health Department has barred 11 blood banks from organising blood donation camps across the state until further orders amid an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities, including the unauthorised transfer and sale of blood components to other states.
A state health department official said the restriction would remain in place until the inquiry by the State Blood Transfusion Board is completed. The order came into effect from August 1.
The blood banks under investigation have been accused of several violations, including allegedly sending blood and plasma outside West Bengal in exchange for money without proper authorisation. Officials are examining allegations of irregularities in blood collection practices and the transfer of red blood cells and plasma at premium rates.
“Till the time the investigation process in the matter is completed, these 11 blood banks would be barred from organising blood donation camps anywhere in the state,” a health department official said.
The restriction, however, applies only to the organisation of external blood donation camps. Blood-related activities within the institutions, including collection and transactions, will continue subject to compliance with prescribed rules and procedures and must be carried out by trained and authorised personnel.
The health department has also directed the State Blood Transfusion Board to closely monitor major blood transactions across the state during the investigation.
The action follows search operations conducted by health department officials at several locations in Kolkata and other districts as part of the probe. Officials reportedly examined records and seized important documents during the inspections.
Sources said some of the blood banks allegedly organised donation camps without obtaining mandatory permissions from the state health department. Investigators are also looking into complaints related to collection practices and the movement of blood components outside the state.
Further action will be decided after completion of the inquiry.
