Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar has busted an alleged cross-border narcotics smuggling network with the arrest of one operative and recovery of 20 kg heroin, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Saturday.
The arrested accused has been identified as Om Sharma, a resident of Jhabal on Amritsar Road in Tarn Taran district. Police have also impounded a Honda City car bearing registration number PB46AJ6021, which was allegedly being used for smuggling activities.
According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigation has revealed that Sharma was allegedly operating on the directions of a foreign-based handler linked to cross-border smugglers. He was reportedly involved in receiving heroin consignments in border areas and supplying them further to different locations across Punjab.
The DGP said CI Amritsar had received specific intelligence inputs regarding associates of a foreign-based handler involved in illegal narcotics trafficking. The accused persons were allegedly receiving heroin consignments from Pakistan-based associates through drones in the Ajnala area of Amritsar district before further distribution.
Acting on the information, police teams intercepted Om Sharma near Dana Mandi at Sohian Kalan on Fatehgarh Churian Road, Amritsar, and recovered 20 kg heroin from his possession.
DGP Yadav said further investigation is underway to trace the forward and backward linkages of the network and identify its possible connections with previously uncovered drug smuggling modules.
A case has been registered as FIR No. 48 dated July 31, 2026, under Sections 21, 25 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the State Special Operation Cell Police Station, Amritsar.
