Char Dham Yatra Suspended for Two Days as Heavy Rain, Landslides Disrupt Uttarakhand

Dehradun, July 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Char Dham Yatra has been suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday following persistent heavy rainfall and multiple landslides across Uttarakhand, with authorities citing pilgrim safety as the primary concern.

The decision was announced by the Commissioner of the Garhwal Division after landslides blocked key pilgrimage routes and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast continued heavy rainfall in several parts of the state. Officials said the yatra would resume once weather conditions improve and routes are declared safe.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for a number of districts, prompting the state administration to intensify precautionary measures. Authorities have urged residents, pilgrims and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in hilly areas vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls.

People have also been advised to stay away from rivers and streams, as continuous rainfall has heightened the risk of flash floods and other weather-related hazards. The administration has appealed to the public to strictly follow advisories issued by the Meteorological Department and district authorities.

As a preventive measure, all schools and Anganwadi centres in the affected areas have been ordered to remain closed on Tuesday.

According to the weather department, heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning is likely in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Pauri Garhwal districts over the next several hours.

Meanwhile, the ongoing monsoon has also damaged infrastructure in the state. A newly constructed bridge over the Tons River at Nanda Ki Chowki in Prem Nagar has suffered damage due to the relentless rainfall, disrupting road connectivity between Dehradun, Vikasnagar and neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.

The administration continues to monitor the situation and has urged people to remain alert until weather conditions stabilize.
