Tejaswin Shankar’s high jump campaign at the Commonwealth Games came to an abrupt end after a knee injury scare, but the Indian athlete has shifted his focus towards the decathlon event, hoping to recover in time for the two-day competition beginning Thursday.
The Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist withdrew from the high jump event after his opening attempt at 2.05m, which he failed to clear. Tejaswin revealed that he felt a sharp pain in his knee during the warm-up before his second attempt and decided against continuing to avoid aggravating the issue.
Speaking about the setback, the emotional athlete said the injury was particularly disappointing as he had arrived in Glasgow with strong confidence of challenging for another Commonwealth Games medal.
Tejaswin said he has dealt with knee tendonitis in the past and described the timing of the injury as unfortunate. He added that he was prepared for the challenging weather conditions in Glasgow, which he believes suit his style of competition.
The athlete said he stopped after his first jump to protect his decathlon campaign, with two days available for recovery and rehabilitation before the event begins.
“I don’t want to ruin the next event that I have,” Tejaswin said, adding that he would use the recovery period to address the issue and aim for a strong performance in the decathlon.
Despite his disappointment, Tejaswin stayed at the venue to support fellow Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, who won a silver medal after clearing 2.25m. Kushare had earlier broken Tejaswin’s eight-year-old national record with a 2.31m jump at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
Tejaswin, the national record holder in decathlon, is an Asian Games silver medallist and has also won two Asian Championships medals in the event. He became the first Indian to cross the 8,000-point mark in the demanding 10-event discipline.
