BJP hails 7.8% GDP growth, attacks Rahul Gandhi over criticism of Indian economy

New Delhi, September 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday welcomed India’s 7.8 per cent GDP growth in the April-June quarter and stepped up its attack on Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, demanding an apology for what it described as his “irresponsible and false” statements about the Indian economy.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said the latest growth figures demonstrated the resilience of the Indian economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “stable leadership”, despite global economic challenges and geopolitical tensions arising from the prolonged conflict in West Asia.

Prasad cited growth figures for several other economies to underline his argument. He said Canada recorded 1.5 per cent growth, Germany 1 per cent and the UK 2.1 per cent during the comparable period.

The BJP leader also criticised Rahul Gandhi for what he called “fallacious” interpretations of the country’s economic performance.

“People don’t take him (Rahul Gandhi) seriously, but there is one country that is heavily influenced by all his comments—and that is Pakistan,” Prasad said, alleging that statements by the Congress leader were being highlighted there as evidence of a weak Indian economy.

He questioned whether Gandhi was seeking to “compromise and weaken the morale of the people of India” and accused him of allowing his opposition to the Modi government, BJP and RSS to spill over into criticism of the country.

Referring to Gandhi’s earlier descriptions of the Indian economy as a “dead economy” and his warning of an “economic tsunami”, Prasad said the BJP strongly rejected the remarks as “irresponsible, false, baseless, and mischievous”.

“Rahul Gandhi must apologise for condemning India’s economy based on falsehood and baseless allegations,” he said.

Prasad attributed the 7.8 per cent growth to the government’s approach of turning economic challenges into opportunities, saying the performance reflected the impact of policies pursued under the Modi government.
