Punjab Good Governance and Information Technology Minister Aman Arora on Tuesday launched the state’s unified digital portal, Digi Punjab, bringing more than 300 government services from 12 departments onto a single, mobile-friendly platform.
Launched at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA), the portal is aimed at simplifying access to government services by replacing fragmented digital platforms, manual paperwork and repeated visits to government offices with a unified system featuring real-time application tracking and defined service timelines.
Arora said all more than 800 government services would be integrated into the portal within the next two months. A deadline has been fixed for every service, and delays will be reflected in the records of the concerned officials.
The services currently available cover birth and death certificates, medical fitness certificates, arms licence issuance and renewal, marriage registration under the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act and Anand Marriage Act, labour welfare schemes, property transfers, medical education registrations and police verification services, including tenant and servant verification.
Citizens can also access revenue certificates such as income, residence and backward-area certificates, caste certificates, social security pensions and water-supply connection sanctions.
Calling good governance his mission, Arora said the portal was intended to ensure that citizens could obtain services without hassle, bribery or sifarish. He said the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was committed to making government services transparent, accountable and time-bound.
Recalling complaints from citizens about files being stuck and repeated visits to offices, Arora said Digi Punjab was designed to address such grievances through technology rather than promises.
He said the portal was more than an IT initiative and represented a shift from citizens having to chase the government to governance reaching citizens. Applications can be tracked through mobile, web and WhatsApp, while Sewa Kendras and doorstep delivery service 1076 would continue to serve as a bridge wherever technology had yet to reach.
Arora said the state had built significant digital infrastructure over the past four years. The Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojana has been digitised for more than 76 lakh beneficiaries, while over two crore QR-coded certificates have been delivered through SMS and WhatsApp. More than 45,000 patwaris, sarpanches and councillors have processed over one crore applications through mobile phones, he added.
He said the system would strengthen accountability by ensuring that applications do not disappear into bureaucratic processes.
Addressing officials, Arora said the success of Digi Punjab would depend on its implementation by the bureaucracy. He called upon officials to train staff, guide citizens and treat complaints received through the portal with the same seriousness as complaints concerning their own families.
Chief Commissioner of the Punjab Transparency and Accountability Commission V.K. Janjua, Additional Chief Secretary, GG&IT Department, D.K. Tiwari, Director Vishesh Sarangal and senior officials from various departments attended the launch.
